The autumn has brought with it an extraordinary month of October, filled with events, festivals and other surprising and enriching cultural appointments. Let's begin by looking at new exhibitions opening this month. "Picasso Arlecchino 1917 - 1937" - looks at a period of heightened creativity in the life of the Spanish artist, whereas "Rovine e rinascite nell'arte italiana (Ruins and rebirths in Italian Art)" and "Julius Caesar. The man, the myth and his achievements" are exhibitions with a strong historic and archaeological component. More ancient art and artefacts are on show at "Ospitando... l'Apollo di Mantova" and in two exhibitions due to close soon: "Egypt to Rome. From history to mythology" and "Cucuteni-Trypillya. A great civilisation of Ancient Europe". Last, a special mention must go to the "Bruno Munari" exhibition dedicated to this master of design, the "Biennale dell'Antiquariato (Antiques Biennale)" hosted at Palazzo Venezia, and "Invito a Palazzo", which offers us the opportunity to admire the artistic heritage and heirlooms kept in Italy's banking institutions. A page of our diaries should be kept aside for this month's concerts. "Bandabardò", Marina Rei - in a singing recital that celebrates the female universe - the "Orchestra Popolare Italiana", impeccably conducted by Ambrogio Sparagna, and Liza Minnelli in "Santa Cecilia It's Wonderful". The city's smaller venues and live music clubs are also having a great return to form after the summer holidays. Among the many notable concerts, the unusual pairing of Luca Barbarossa and Neri Marcorè, performing together and exclusively at The Place, is worth an extra special mention. The Teatro dell'Opera hosts the acclaimed "Sydney Symphony Orchestra" and two very refined ballets: "Swan Lake" - which has been going strong since 1937 - and "Il mondo delle cose senza nome", based on the literary gem by Daniela Rossi. Dance also takes centre stage at the Vascello Theatre with a series dedicated to new forms of contemporary dance, while the Auditorium della Conciliazione hosts "Uto Ughi per Roma", a traditional event conceived by, and with the participation of, the great Lombard violinist. Let's not forget to keep a space in our diaries for theatrical offerings and the new plays of the season, such as "Esplor/Azioni" (and its multi-disciplinary performances), and classical pièces such as "Il piacere dell'onestà" and "Filumena Marturano". Music, music and more music is the name of the game in "Hairspray... grasso è bello (Hairspray... fat is beautiful)" and "Concha Bonita", while pure magical enchantment is the order of the day at "Gran Varietà Brachetti", the latest offering of Arturo Brachetti. Belly laughs are guaranteed during this month's performances of "Casalinghi disperati (Desperate Housewives)", "Chiedimi se voglio la luna (Ask me if I want the moon)" and "Singles", or when Dado reveals himself to be "Onesto ma non troppo (Honest but not excessively so)", and Lillo & Greg put on "SKETCH & SODA. Gli Squallidi". There is no choice but to continue to fill our diaries with a series of memorable cultural appointments, such is the wealth of offerings this month. "Romaeuropa Festival", for example, is a barometer of the best in contemporary culture, and the "International Film Festival of Rome" is dedicated to Brazil and its cinema this year. "The city in the country 2008. Ottobrata Romana", "Guided tours of the Parco dell'Appia Antica" and "Picnic Sundays" are three outdoor initiatives that offer the simple but often underrated pastime of spending time in nature and enjoying local gastronomic traditions. They ensure that this splendid month of October is richer than ever... Exhibitions web - top IN THE SPOTLIGHT Palazzo Venezia, via del Plebiscito, 118. About 50 exhibitors show their pieces in a beautiful display laid out in the historic and grand rooms of the palazzo. From 16 to 22 and from 24 to 26 Oct h11-20; thu 23 Oct h11-23 Castel Sant'Angelo, lungotevere di Castello, 50. Info 066819111 Until 28 Oct: L'Egitto a Roma dalla storia al mito The exhibition aims to document the link between the two most ancient and powerful empires that ever existed, Rome and Ancient Egypt. The high number of obelisks and many Roman artefacts show how Roman art was profoundly influenced by Egyptian art. The artists of the Renaissance also gleaned their inspiration from the ancient prophets, the Great Hermes Trismegisto for example, and the fascinating and mysterious hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt. The Borgias wanted the story of Egyptian deities painted on the ceilings and walls in their rooms in the Vatican and Raphael used a semblance of Artemis Ephesia (thinking her to be Isis) on the ceiling of the Vatican's Stanza della Segnatura. An intense passion for Egypt was rife throughout the 18th century onwards and has continued on until the present day; the Americans wanted a pyramid on their dollar bill and the French unveiled the mysteries of the hieroglyphics. Tue-sun h9-19 Palazzo della Cancelleria, piazza della Cancelleria. Info 0698260929 Until 31 Oct: Cucuteni-Trypillya. Una grande civiltà dell'antica Europa (Cucuteni-Trypillya. One of the great ancient European civilisations) Sergiy Chaykovskyi, Valentin Dergacev and Romeo Dumitrescu have curated this archaeological exhibition. Thanks to an elaborate series of digs that began at the end of the 19th century and have continued to the present day, a number of very diverse finds bear witness to the existence of the Cucuteni-Trypillya civilisation and its status as the first great European civilisation (which developed in the current eastern territories of our continent). Tue-sun h10-18 Musei Capitolini - Palazzo Caffarelli. Piazza del Campidoglio, 1. Info 060608 Until 23 Nov: L'invenzione dei Fori Imperiali. Demolizioni e scavi: 1924-1940 (The invention of the Imperial Fora. Demolition and excavations: 1924-1940) The 140 works on show (among which photos, paintings, frescoes and ancient sculptures) document the demolition and excavation work in the massive area that includes the Forum of Augustus, Trajan's Forum and Markets, the Forum of Ceasar and the Forum of Nerva. The artists behind these figurative creations are Michele Cascella, Maria Barosso, Lucia Hoffmann, Giulio Farnese and Pio Bottoni. Particularly interesting are the 30 finds from the Roman era and the five pictorial and sculptural fragments dating from the 16th and 17th centuries that bear witness to the digs that have taken place. Tue-sun h9-20. €4,50, reduced €2,50 Musei Capitolini - Palazzo dei Conservatori, Sala degli Arazzi. Piazza del Campidoglio, 1. Info 060608 Until 6 Jan 2009: Ospitando... l'Apollo di Mantova (Hosting the Apollo of Mantua) This exhibition is part of the "Ospitando..." series that encourages the circulation - in the literal sense of the term - of art, i.e. the exchange of works between different museums in different cities. The Capitoline museums host this refined sculpture - a marvellous marble Apollo probably dating back to Hadrian's era - which is on loan from the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua for a limited time. Tue-sun h9-10. €8, reduced €6 (the ticket includes entry into the exhibition, "The invention of the Imperial Fora. Demolition and archaeological excavations: 1924-1940) Scuderie del Quirinale, via XXIV Maggio, 16. Info 0639967500 Until 11 Jan 2009: Giovanni Bellini One of the most famous Italian painters of the 15th century, Giovanni Bellini (a.k.a. as Giambellino) is celebrated in this exhibition. His contribution to the development of painting techniques was considerable, and ranged from the employment of tempera paints to his very particular use of oils in the manner typical of Flemish painters, creating soft tones and amazing light and colour effects. About 70 of Giambellino's works (including his famous 'Baptism of Christ') are displayed in the Scuderie del Quirinale exhibition venue and will be followed by shows featuring the masterpieces of Titian and Giorgione. Complesso del Vittoriano, via San Pietro in Carcere. Info 066780664 From 10 Oct to 8 Feb 2009: Picasso Arlecchino 1917 - 1937 A unique exhibition curated by Yve-Alain Bois shows 180 pieces by Pablo Picasso, on loan from the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museu Picasso in Barcelona. Oils, etchings and drawings tell of the artist's life and work between 1917 and 1937 - a period that came after the cold melancholy of the blue period, the pale cheerful tones of the pink period, the determined lines of the African period and the intuition and decomposition of the Cubist period - when the Spanish artist was in a discovery phase in which different styles and inspirations converge and were transformed into something free from the constraints and labels of critics. Colosseo, piazza del Colosseo From 3 Oct to 15 Feb 2009: Rovine e rinascite nell'arte italiana (Ruins and rebirths in Italian art) This exhibition focuses on the themes of recovering and preserving the artistic and natural landscape of the nation. These 60 works tell of the various measures and developments that Italy has developed - decrees, laws, private and collective actions - to safeguard its most beautiful sites and treasures. The exhibition is divided into six sections - "The origins of conservation", "Italian Unity and National education", "20th century progress", "Fascist propaganda and war", "The development of conservation principles" and "Counter-trends: conservation today" - and among the many works on show are the Birth of Bacchus from Budapest, the statue of the Goddess Niobe from the Villa dei Quintili and fragments of the Metopes of Selinunte sculptures from Palermo. Until 27 Oct h8,30-18,30; from 28 Oct to 15 Feb h8,30-16,30. €11, reduced €6,50 Chiostro del Bramante, via della Pace. Info 0668809035 From 24 Oct to 5 Apr 2009: Giulio Cesare. L’uomo, le imprese, il mito (Julius Caesar. The man, the enterprise, the myth) An exceptional and exclusive event coming up in Rome is the first show dedicated to a quintessential figure in Roman history. Julius Caesar was the link between the republic and the empire, a charismatic man and an extraordinary leader. A series of valuable archaeological finds - sculptures, mosaics, frescoes, jewels, gems, coins - are on show, as are sculptures and paintings by major artists like Hayez, Tiepolo and Rubens that tell the story of Caesar's life. A unique collective exhibition curated by Gianni Mercurio and hosted by the Bilotti Museum. Tue-sun h9-19. €6, reduced €4 Sala Santa Rita, via Montanara (ad. piazza Campitelli). Info 060608 Until 24 Ott: La favola del pesce cambiato. Disegni di Gianluigi Toccafondo, testo di Emma Dante (The fable of the changed fish. Drawings by Gianluigi Toccafondo, words by Emma Dante)" An absolutely original exhibition laid out among the dual track of the visual and textual. The combination of these two artists - Gianluigi Toccafondo, who imposes the language of images on the parallel universes of short films, advertising, the small screen and the theatre, and Emma Dante, a strong and interesting voice in the contemporary Italian theatrical landscape - works very well. The drawings are characterised by immediate and pronounced depth and colour and are easily entwined with the energy of words written for children and adults. Mon-fri h10-18. Admission free Museo di Roma, piazza S. Pantaleo, 10. Info 0667108346 Until 26 Oct: Vita in Comune. 1930 – 2007. Info 066780131 From 2 to 26 Oct: Ana Maria Laurent, Dreaming... Memory, emotion and sentiment are the central elements of the work of contemporary artist Ana Maria Laurent. The Argentine artist exhibits all over the world and frequently shows in the capital. She makes iconic pieces that represent the universe of women in all its complexity - a universe that is narrated in the language of symbolism. Red and black are the essential colours and absolute mainstays of Laurent's world, leading us into a purely magical dimension. Or, as the title of the show suggests, "dreaming"... Tue-sun h9-19. Vanessa Beecroft is taking part with "VB53 31 NT", one of her famed tableau vivant featuring nude or semi-dressed women in choreographed movements that explores our obsession with the body, exhibiting ourselves, and fashion. Wolfgang Tillmans is one of the most innovative photographers around. He takes photos of simple aspects of our daily lives, but is also partial to still lifes and interiors. For this occasion Tillmans shows "City", a work he created in 2006. Mon-thu h9-13 and h14-17; fri h9-13 Museo di Roma in Trastevere, piazza S. Egidio, 1b. Info 060608 Until 2 Nov: Lisette Model e la sua scuola. Fotografie 1937 - 2002 (Lisette Model and her pupils. Photos 1937 - 2002) Lisette Model was born in Vienna, lived in France and moved to New York in her late 30s where her creativity took off and she became successful. It was said of her that she "took photos with her entire body". Model only discovered the magic of the camera lens at 30 but, from that moment on, she was hooked and started creating photos that reveal the intimacy of her subjects in a startlingly fresh and natural way. The ironic images on display tell the story of France and the US and inspired numerous photographers, who worked with or under Model and are also represented in this show: Raymond Jacobs, who shot a famous portrait of Louis Armstrong, Leon Levinstein, one of the most refined street photographers, and finally Bruce Weber, who has created ad campaigns for Versace, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Tue-sun h10-20. A work by Huang Rui) A major site-specific installation created for the Museo delle Mura by Chinese avant-garde artist Huang Rui. The artist derived his inspiration from the large stone buildings and monuments in Rome and created a striking piece made out of 2,008 bricks collected from the ‘hutong’ neighbourhoods in Beijing, old quarters which are being demolished to create new developments for the Olympics. The soul of the show is its Eastern chronological articulation, which sees time as a perpetual cycle of long temporal cycles, whereas in the West time is a succession between one number and the next with no sense of continuity. Each of the 2,008 bricks features a western numeral (from 1 to 2008) and a date taken from the Chinese calendar, as well as the name of the emperor of that time. The bricks are further organised by Chinese zodiac signs and animal spirits. "Every writer feels the presence of respected predecessors within him. This doesn't necessarily mean that he is influenced by them, but that the febrile intelligent state he felt while reading them encouraged him, one day, to throw himself into writing. Asking contemporary authors to choose and comment on texts they love is a bit the same as asking them why, and thanks to whom, they write." July promises to be a red-hot month, not only because of high temperatures but also because of the Estate Romana summer festival that is just getting going.

Art lovers will be deligted to hear that the Quadriennale is on again for the 15th year, "Il Quattrocento" focuses exclusively on Renaissance art, Correggio is celebrated in a retrospective, and Rome and Egypt are under the artistic microscope at Castel Sant'Angelo, to name just a handful of the best exhibitions on this month.
Other exhibitions include: the complex figure of former president "Luigi Einaudi", the paintings and sculptures of contemporary artist Kokocinski, the photographic diary of Andrea Quattrini (that tells the story of Japan today) and the design masterpieces of Jean Prouvé.

From the art scene to the music scene... From stadiums to piazzas, from the more conventional venues, such as the Auditorium, to the traditional summer locations such as Villa Ada, here are just some of the artists that will make us sing, dance and sweat: George Benson, Ben Harper, Bjork, Sinéad O'Connor and Youssou N'Dour.
Italian names include Ligabue, Daniele Silvestri, Max Gazzè, Fiorella Mannoia, Pino Daniele and Subsonica. Teenagers (and the young at heart) will enjoy performances by bands like Tokio Hotel, Bluvertigo and Almamegretta.
Jazz aficionados will head straight for concerts by Stefano Bollani and Enrico Rava, world music lovers will enjoy Piero Pelù and Roy Paci & Aretuska and 80s music fanatics will get a kick out of a concert by Duran Duran.

Finally, for those who like their classical music with a pop tinge, Giovanni Allevi will be gracing us with his refined piano sounds... Staying in the classical genre, great operas such as "Aida" and "Lucia di Lammermoor" await us at the Baths of Caracalla, "Invito alla danza" takes place in the Villa Doria Pamphilj park and the "Notti romane" will spread its magic in the Parco del Teatro Marcello.

Other musical genres also move to the outdoors. Classical music is on offer at the "Anfiteatro della Quercia del Tasso" and exhilarating cabaret at "All'ombra del Colosseo"... The Globe Theatre brings us some of Shakespeare's masterpieces, whereas "Cosmophonies" will brings us musicians of the calibre of Raffaele Paganini, Ascanio Celestini and Goran Bregovic.

Finally, the fashion shows of "AltaromAltamoda" are back, the "Golden Gala" shows us the best in athletics and many other events ("Notti animate sulle Terrazze di Castel Sant'Angelo", "Lungo er Tevere", "RomaEstate", to name but a few) allow visitors to enjoy Rome's many different monuments, neighbourhoods and piazzas by night...

Until 28 Oct: L'Egitto a Roma dalla storia al mito (Egypt in Rome from history to myth)
The exhibition aims to document the link between the two most ancient and powerful empires that ever existed, Rome and Ancient Egypt. Until 13 Jul: Carlo Levi e Roma. Il respiro della città (Carlo Levi in Rome. The breath of the city)
This exhibition makes clear the desire for artistic renewal and innovation in the early 20th century, when art was no longer satisfied with representing man according to predetermined aesthetic canons but rather wanted to empathise with him. The exhibition displays 28 paintings by painters from the Roman School (among which Pirandello, Mafai, Scipione, Trombadori, Afro, Ferrazzi, Scialoja, Melli and Capogrossi), but above all 46 paintings by Carlo Levi (dated from 1926 to 1954). Levi's (and his followers') style evolved with the passing of time: the colours became more decisive, the brush strokes gained body, the still lifes moved closer to the Expressionistic style, the views became visionary. Levi's portraits should garner a special mention: the painter conceives of them first as a form of auto-representation and an account of our own subjectivity, and in second place, a way of establishing a dialogue with the subject represented. A series of paintings and sculptures that explore the poetic vision of a contemporary artist who often delves into the classical world of myths (such as into the stories of Orpheus and Eurydice, Prometheus, Venus and Medea) for inspiration. This tragic, and at the same time positive, concept of destiny is only one example of Kokocinski's conceptual bipolarity. For him existence is made up of bouts of torment and ecstasy, which succeed each other with no end in sight. Tue-sun h10,30-19,30. Admission free

Until 23 Nov: Pechino 2008: il tempo, gli animali, la storia. Un’opera di Huang Rui (Beijing 2008: Time, Animals, History. A work by Huang Rui)
A major site-specific installation created for the Museo delle Mura by Chinese avant-garde artist Huang Rui. Tue-sun h9-14
